► Schistosoma mansoni is locally adapted to Biomphalaria pfeifferi from Toho-Todougba (Benin). ► Pre-patency was shortest in sympatric snails. ► Cercarial production was compatible with good survival of sympatric snails. ► Growth compensation occurred in sympatric snails. ► Fecundity compensation occurred in sympatric snails.
