► Radio-attenuated parasite as prophylactic agent for experimental murine visceral leishmaniasis. ► Nitric oxide & superoxide anion release in primed groups increased. ► Enhanced release of Th1 cytokines & down regulation of Th2 cytokines in immunized groups established. ► Spleen and liver of these mice are protected from parasite infection.
