Abstract
⺠We propose two desertification indicators accounting for local dryness dynamics. ⺠We assess local dynamics in the Aridity Intensity Index over the south of Portugal. ⺠The southeast region is the most threatened by droughts and extreme dryness. ⺠Significant increasing drying trends occurred in extensive areas from 1940 to 1999.
