Assessment of human exposure to benzene through foods from the Belgian market

► Benzene was quantified in 455 foodstuffs in Belgian and possible sources identified. ► Benzene was detected in 58% of samples with highest values in smoked and canned fish. ► Dietary benzene intake was quantified for the Belgian adult population. ► Probabilistic intakes were 0.02 μg kg−1 bw d−1. ► Estimated benzene intakes are below the minimum risk level for oral chronic exposure.
