Evaluation of artificially-weathered standard fuel oil toxicity by marine invertebrate embryogenesis bioassays

► We describe an increase in marine ecotoxicity of weathered oil, in contrast with the classic paradigm. ► We prove by using analytical chemistry that the increased toxicity is not related with the total aromatic content. ► Formation of oxidized derivatives of parental aromatics might account for the increase in toxicity throughout weathering.
