► Hematite, zero-valent iron and zeolite were used to treat contaminated sediments. ► Effect of mineral additives was evaluated using the Microtox solid phase test. ► All mineral additives can decrease toxicity in highly contaminated samples. ► Hematite and zeolite increase toxicity in less contaminated samples.
