Abstract
► We measured mercury in sediment cores collected from lakes in Svalbard (Norway). ► Sedimentary mercury accumulation has increased twofold to fivefold since 1850. ► We estimate a modern net atmospheric mercury flux of 7 ± 3 μg m−2 y−1. ► Atmospheric mercury depletion events may contribute, on average, half of the net flux.
