Abstract
► NF-like and RO-like osmotically-driven membranes (OMs) were systematically compared. ► RO-like OMs performed better in sodium chloride based osmotic processes. ► High-permeability NF-like OMs can achieve higher water flux by using proper draw solutes. ► NF-like TFC OMs tend to be more fouling resistant. ► Comprehensive criteria on selection of OMs and process optimization were elucidated.
