Abstract
► We examine the extent of metal contamination in the Guadalquivir River estuary. ► Metal levels have significantly declined 10 years after the Aznalcóllar mine spill. ► Sediment concentrations do not seem to pose serious hazards to aquatic biota. ► Metal and arsenic levels in S. plana are high and of concern for human health. ► A potential new source of Pb and As entering the estuary should be monitored.
