► We examine the copper toxicity on the fertilization success of coral gametes. ► Gametes of Montipora capitata are sensitive to Cu pollution. ► The night of spawning influences the sensitivity of gametes to Cu. ► Plasticity in gametes is likely changing their capacity to face Cu toxicity.
