Abstract
► SRP diversity was comparable in copper-polluted and non-polluted reference sediments. ► Increase of copper lowers drastically SRP abundance in the contaminated sediment. ► Total bacterial abundance is less affected than SRP community by copper. ► Possible lateral transfers of copper-resistance genes are suggested.
