Abstract
► Redox sensitivity of Fe in P binding does not impede lake restoration. ► A single Fe application, at low external P loading, can stabilize P binding long-term. ► Surplus Fe is necessary to compensate for Fe binding by organic matter. ► μX-ray fluorescence revealed a continuous Fe translocation towards sediment surface. ► Concurrent release of Fe and P ensures their oxygen-mediated co-precipitation.
