Abstract

The permeation rate of Co(II) and Li(I) from a dilute aqueous sulfate media using supported liquid membrane (SLM) technique has been studied. The microporous hydrophobic PVDF film was used as the solid support for the liquid membrane and Cyanex 272 was used as mobile carrier. The liquid–liquid extraction of Co(II) and Li(I) using Cyanex 272 in sulfate media was studied and compared with supported liquid membrane results. Effect of different parameters such as speed of rotation, pH in feed solution, Cyanex 272 concentration in membrane phase, Co(II) and Li(I) concentration in feed solution and strip acid concentration on Co(II) flux JCo(II) and Li(I) flux JLi(I) has been studied. The Co(II) flux increased with increasing of pH from 4.00 to 6.00 and then decreased with further increase of pH up to 6.75. The Co(II) flux JCo(II) was also increased with increase of Cyanex 272 concentration in membrane phase up to 750 mol/m3 then decreased. The flux for Li(I) was remained constant. The separation factors for Co(II) and Li(I) were calculated at different experimental condition and were reported. At suitable optimum condition of pH 6.00, Cyanex 272 concentration in membrane phase of 750 mol/m3, strip acid concentration of 25 mol/m3 and stirring speed of 5.83 Hz (350 rpm), the flux for Co(II) JCo(II) was 82.20 × 10−6 mol/m2 s and the flux for Li(I) JLi(I) was 0.918 × 10−6 mol/m2 s.
