Abstract
► A quantitative analysis of three vertical mortality estimation methods is conducted. ► Underlying theory is reviewed to clarify inherent assumptions and sources of error. ► Application to data reveals importance of input variables and assumptions. ► Simulations show large errors can occur in dynamic or advective environments. ► Ways to detect when methods are applicable and to assess uncertainty are discussed.
