Abstract
⺠A quantitative analysis of three vertical mortality estimation methods is conducted. ⺠Underlying theory is reviewed to clarify inherent assumptions and sources of error. ⺠Application to data reveals importance of input variables and assumptions. ⺠Simulations show large errors can occur in dynamic or advective environments. ⺠Ways to detect when methods are applicable and to assess uncertainty are discussed.
