Abstract
Barrier membranes with aligned inorganic flakes have permeabilities which are dramatically lower perpendicular to the flakes than parallel to the flakes. Electrical conductivity measurements in membranes swollen in aqueous ionic solutions show this anisotropic permeability is consistent with theories of transport in these barriers.
