•Switchable permeance increase and decrease as the membrane was reduced and oxidised.•He/CO2 permselectivity from 130 to 80 by switching from the first to third cycle.•Redox cycles changed the FexCo1−xOy formation and silica membrane structure.•He/CO2 permselectivity of decreased at a higher ratio after the oxidation cycle.
