► Particle arrangements have a significant impact on separation efficiency. ► Particles closer to outer wall at entrance tend to be easily separated to the underflow. ► RRM-hydrocyclone can improve the separation efficiency of fine particles. ► RRM-hydrocyclone demonstrated a separation efficiency of 83% (0.53 μm at inlet).
