•The new magnitude calibration for the seismic catalog was explained.•The Monte Carlo magnitude mapping for the seismic catalog was clarified.•High b-values were interpreted in terms of reactivation of asperity zones.•The reported b-value variations had predictive information before the mainshock.•Variations in b-values in the Lake Van region were reflected stress variations.
