► Surface sediments in the northern East China Sea have a complex provenance pattern. ► Their provenance is unraveled with fuzzy c-means clustering of magnetic parameters. ► Magnetic parameters indicate a dominant input from Chinese river systems. ► Major current systems further shape the geographic distribution of surface sediments.
