► NO removal is enhanced on the Y-doped MnOX/TiO2 catalysts for low-temperature SCR. ► Y doping can increase oxygen vacancies for charge compensation on the catalysts. ► Oxygen vacancies by Y doping are responsible for the high catalytic activity.
