Abstract
► Flow characteristics around a sphere located over a flat plate was experimentally investigated by PIV. ► Boundary layer velocity profile causes obviously asymmetry in the wake flow patterns. ► Jet-like flow increasing the flow entrainment between the core and wake regions is formed over the plate. ► Flow structures are restless due to the continuously developing shear flow phenomena of sphere wake. ► Interaction of boundary layer and sphere wake creates a vortex-induced separation on the wall.
