Abstract

•We have prepared a novel recyclable heterogeneous catalyst: SiO2–CuCl2.•The catalyst has been fully characterized by FTIR, SEM, TEM, TGA AND AAS studies.•3,4-Dihydropyrimidinones have been synthesized under thermal and microwave condition.•Products of the reaction have been characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, mass and IR.•X-ray: 5-(ethoxycarbonyl)-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-6-methyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one.

Silica supported copper(II) chloride is prepared as a green heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of biologically and pharmaceutically important 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones under microwave and thermal conditions. The catalyst has been characterized by various instrumental techniques such as FTIR, SEM, TEM, TGA and AAS. In addition, products are characterized by 1H NMR, IR, 13C NMR and mass spectral data. The reaction of m-nitrobenzaldehyde, ethylacetoacetate and urea produced 5-(ethoxycarbonyl)-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-6-methyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-one and its structure has been determined using X-ray crystallography which also showed the inter-molecular H-bonding packing arrangement of molecules.
