Abstract
► We characterized inter-annual variation in the seasonal patterns of balsam fir tree growth. ► We identified the most important climatic factors related to the growth pattern. ► Air temperature and solar radiation appeared to regulate tree growth initiation. ► Maximum growth rate was mainly related to snowpack depth and the timing of snowmelt. ► Timing associated with growth cessation appears to be generally independent of climate.
