Abstract
As part of the French human biomonitoring program, a cross-sectional survey, called Esteban, based on a representative sample of the French population (6-74 years old) is ongoing. Its aims are: (i) to estimate exposure biomarkers levels of various chemical agents having an impact presumed and/or observed on the health, and establish reference values; (ii) describe food consumptions, physical activity, sedentary and nutritional state; (iii) estimate prevalence of chronic diseases, asthma, atopy and allergic diseases. Each participant answers a “questionnaire survey”, and undergoes “a biological and clinical exam”, including a range of measures (anthropometric, blood pressure, functional respiratory investigations for the adults) and a collection of biological samples (blood, urine and hair). A hundred of chemicals belonging to biomarkers' families (pesticides, metals, phthalates, bisphenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbonsâ¦), of nutritional state and chronic diseases, will be analyzed in centralized laboratories. Esteban included 1104 children and 2503 adults. Participation rates were between 39% and 54% for children and between 43% and 57% for adults. Esteban will allow following the evolution of indicators in ENNS (2006-2007), it will then allow comparison to other national and international initiatives, and bring information for health policies and regulations aiming to reduce environmental exposures to chemicals.
