► Catalyst-inert mixtures produce axial activity variability in reactors. ► Statistically driven activity variability can cause some reactor tubes to run away. ► The effect is significant for practical pill sizes and extents of dilution. ► Larger pill size and greater extents of dilution increase the axial activity variability.
