Abstract
⺠High ethanol content fuels enabled further small fuel and NOx emissions savings. ⺠The primary mechanism was faster burning and improved residual gas tolerance. ⺠Butanol had a negligible effect on residual gas tolerance, regardless of volume. ⺠For all fuels, variable valve timing offered the greatest NOx reduction potential.
