Abstract
► A model of primary fragmentation of coal under different heating conditions is presented. ► The model accounts for thermal stress and volatile overpressure. ► Under fixed/moving bed conditions particles break at the center in coarse fragments. ► Under PF conditions a multitude of fines is produced from the outer shell. ► For large particles and severe heating conditions multiple successive events occur.
