Abstract
► Low heating rate pyrolysis followed by a high heating rate one as two-step pyrolysis. ► Two-step pyrolysis of wood increases char yield. ► Two-step pyrolysis of cellulose increases very slightly char yield. ► Two-step pyrolysis of hemicelluloses and lignin does not increase char yield. ► Interactions among the constituents promote char formation during two-step pyrolysis.
