► Spreading rate of sand-water slurry jet in water varies with nozzle size. ► Water-phase centreline velocity increases with increasing particle concentration. ► Absolute entrainment coefficient of slurry jets is larger than that of water jets. ► Particle drag coefficient decreases in a particle group. ► Particle concentration increases the water-phase turbulent shear stress.
