► The log-conformation tensor approach is used to simulate time-dependent, 3D moving free surface flows. ► The Upper-Convected Maxwell (UCM) model is used. ► Numerical results at very high Weissenberg number flows are presented. ► The unsteady extrudate swell is investigated. ► The jet buckling of viscoelastic fluids is analysed.
