During direct thermal treatment, the non-diamond carbonaceous shell of detonation nanodiamond (DND) powder was oxidized, resulting in increase of oxygen-containing groups on the particle surface. As a result, the particle surface becomes negatively charged, and the powder turns to be more hydrophilic.
