► Solvation of hematoporphyrin and non-electrolytes in the binary system was studied. ► Extended coordination model parameters for the solutes studied have been computed. ► Polar side-chains of the porphyrin are located in a protein-like environment. ► Apolar parts of the solute molecule prefer a lipid-like environment.
