Abstract
The presented work has been undertaken to evaluate the applicability of BaO doped PbO-P2O5 glass system as gamma ray shielding material in terms of mass attenuation coefficient and half value layer at photon energies 662, 1173 and1332Â keV. A meaningful comparison of their radiation shielding properties has been made in terms of their mass attenuation coefficient and HVL parameters with standard radiation shielding concrete 'barite'. The density, molar volume, XRD, FTIR, Raman and UV-visible techniques and mechanical properties (by Yamane and Mackenzie's procedure) have been used to study the structural properties of the prepared glass system in order to check the possibility of their commercial utility as alternate to conventional concrete for gamma ray shielding applications.
