Abstract

In this study we present a fast and inexpensive method for the estimation of methane-producing archaea with a culture-based method using most probable number (MPN) counting of the metabolic product methane.

► A method for the estimation of a cultivable methanogen population is described. ► The method is based on most probable number (MPN) counting. ► Conventional laboratory equipment can be used without the need for a glove-box.
