► The psychologists' accounts were scattered with “client categorisations” (CC). ► CC focused mainly on psychological dimensions of the clients' diversity. ► The psychologists experienced a dilemma between prescribed and situated practices. ► The psychologists reported non-standard practices that had their own rationality. ► Dealing with clients' diversity appears to be a practical (moral) problem.
