The Ullmann coupling of amines with aryl iodide and bromides has been carried out efficiently using Pd(OAc)2/1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino) ethane [DPPE] in toluene as a solvent. The effects of various parameters such as temperature, solvent, base, catalyst loading and metal–ligand ratio on the reaction system were studied. The reaction is applicable to a wide variety of substituted aryl amines and alkyl amines with different steric and electronic properties.
