•A functionalized organosolv lignin was newly prepared under microwave-heating.•The obtained biocompatible material contained abundant dithiocarbamate groups.•It showed a fast adsorption rate (equilibrium time: 40 min) to Hg(II) from water.•It showed a higher adsorption capacity to Hg(II) (210 mg/g) than lignin, cellulose.

A functionalized organosolv lignin with dithiocarbamate groups (OLDTC) was firstly prepared by a microwave-assisted method, the influence of synthetic parameters on the yield of OLDTC was studied. The resulting OLDTC was characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), element analysis and surface area measurement. The batch adsorption tests were conducted by investigating the effects of OLDTC dosage, contact time, and initial Hg(II) concentration on the adsorption of Hg(II) by OLDTC. It was found that the adsorption process could be equilibrated in 40 min and followed by a pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherm fitted well to the Freundlich model indicating a heterogeneous surface of OLDTC. The saturated adsorption capacity of Hg(II) was up to 210 mg/g, 2.8-time of lignin, and 16-time higher than polyacrylamide grafted cellulose. The obtained OLDTC can not only effectively adsorb Hg(II) in water, but also be easily prepared and eco-friendly. This study highlighted a great potential of using organosolv lignin as an alternative precursor for green adsorbent production and application in heavy metal removal from water.
