Abstract
► Crashes at rail level crossings (RLXs) are problematic worldwide. ► Situation awareness (SA) is a key component of RLX crashes. ► We studied, on-road, novice and experienced driver SA at four RLXs. ► Novice and experienced driver SA differed in terms of content and structure. ► It is concluded that experienced driver SA is more efficient at RLXs.
