► Several factors suggest morning driving may be associated with excessive sleepiness. ► The prevalence of chronic sleepiness during a long-distance morning trip was 18.3%. ► Night-workers had a greater proportion of acute sleepiness and less sleep. ► Night-workers drove longer distances and worked longer hours.
