► 'Revealed differences' were effective as a protocol to facilitate meaningful and emotionally charged conversations during a driving task. ► Emotionally charged conversations between couples were found to be detrimental to the driving task. ► Emotionally difficult conversations were found to be more disruptive to driving with the passenger present, than those conducted using a handsfree telephone.
