Abstract
► An area-wide self explaining roads (SER) intervention was implemented. ► Following the intervention there were changes in local road user behaviour. ► On local roads a higher proportion of pedestrians were observed. ► Less constrained road user behaviour and less through traffic were also observed. ► Two functionally different road categories were created, supporting an SER road hierarchy.
