Abstract
► Unrestrained objects weighing >2 kg were prevalent in compartments of crashed cars. ► Heavy objects in the boot often moved into the compartment on impact. ► Seatbacks were significantly offset or wrecked by moving unrestrained objects. ► Seatback offset was associated with severe head, thoracic, and abdominal injuries. ► Improved rear seat weight resistance and use of cargo barriers, nets, and straps is needed.
