► We review biosynthesis of inorganic nanomaterials using 'unusual' microorganisms. ► The inorganic nanomaterials include biominerals, metals, sulfides and oxides. ► The 'unusual' microorganisms predominantly include bacteria, fungi, and algae. ► The current status and future perspective on biosynthesis is discussed.
