Abstract
► Oil jet peening induces compressive residual stress with associated grain refinement. ► Oil jet peened aluminium samples showed improved wear resistance that of as-annealed samples. ► Presence of compressive residual stress delays the crack initiation and retards crack propagation. ► A complex adhesion and oxidation wear mechanism is observed at low applied normal loads. ► Abrasion wear mechanism was found to be a predominant at high applied normal loads.
