Atomic layer deposition of alumina on porous polytetrafluoroethylene membranes for enhanced hydrophilicity and separation performances

▸ We demonstrate that ALD is a simple and effective technique to modify PTFE membranes. ▸ Strong adhesion between alumina and PTFE was evidenced by a harsh ultrasonication. ▸ The effective pore size and surface hydrophilicity could be well controlled. ▸ The retention property of PTFE membranes could be improved at no expense of flux. ▸ The modified membranes also afford remarkably enhanced fouling resistance.
