Abstract

•We study the electric field of the atmosphere.•The method of investigation is the numerical solution of three-dimensional boundary value problems.•The basis of modeling scheme is a rod placed between cloud and earth surface.•Edge effect of cloud is taken into account.•The values of field intensity of the cloud edges and the top of grounded rod are derived.

This paper presents the research of three dimensional exterior boundary problems related to electric fields in atmosphere. The research is done by the inversion method. This method is based on the finite difference method (FDM) and uses Laplace's equation. The modeling scheme includes the lightning rod placed between the cloud and earth surface. We investigate the features of the modeling scheme taking into account the edge effect of the cloud. The goal of this paper is to determine the maximum value of the field intensity calculated for the cloud edges and the top of the grounded rod; and to determine the field distribution on the earth surface and the bottom of the cloud. The distribution of the field intensity has been calculated under thunderstorm conditions, but before corona appearance. We present the results of the numerical solution and their comparative analysis.
