This paper deals with the application of a new excitation system for synchronous generator terminal voltage application. The proposed excitation system is based on the control of the main SG and the exciter machine (dual control). The comparison between the proposed structure and the system with single control shows the advantage of the dual control in reducing the energy loss in the exciter machine. Implementation in a real time domain is performed. Experimental results are presented and discussed.
► Voltage regulation of synchronous generators. ► Dual control of synchronous generators. ► Modeling, simulation and experimental tests. ► Comparison between the dual and single control. ► Reduction (about 82%) of the excitation current in steady state.
