Abstract

A closed loop simulation technique of power and communication network for smart grid scenarios is investigated in this paper. Depending on the voltage level, different communication technologies are used to improve the system intelligence. Considering network overlap and reach of communication system an optimal zone division is used to ensure minimal communication traffic. Depending on the communication technology and available infrastructure the communication delay and data loss varies. The best way to investigate the impact of a communication network in coordinated control is by closed loop simulations. In this paper the power network is simulated in Simpower while communication network is simulated in TrueTime. There are connected back to back in Simulink and operated in closed loop. This simulation method provides users to investigate power system control with communication in loop without detail modeling of the communication network. The closed loop simulation in a zone based test system is demonstrated in low voltage (with DG penetration) as well as in an islanding of a medium voltage network.
