Abstract
We present a review concerning optical techniques allowing one to characterize discrete particles embedded in “flows” (possibly at rest), relying on the use of lasers as illuminating sources. It is essentially based on the archival literature published in the period 2009-2013, although prior references are also cited to provide a better understanding of the issues under discussion.
