Abstract
This study presents an overview of the important developments in the automotive engine control systems in the last few decades and discusses some of the prospects that new technologies promise. Recent enabling sensor and catalyst technologies are briefly described. The trend is towards more complex engine and aftertreatment configurations to meet the increasingly stringent emissions legislation and fuel consumption requirements. The challenges for the model-based systematic control of the complex systems are described.
